Carbon Reporting System

The EICC Carbon Reporting System is a standard approach to measuring and reporting carbon emissions in the global electronics supply chain

The System is a spreadsheet-based tool used by companies to quantify and share emissions data. It is based on global standards such as the Greenhouse Gas Protocol and established reporting formats such as the Carbon Disclosure Project. Use of the tool is free for members and their invited suppliers; other companies may access the tool for a fee. Upon agreement by the supplier, completed questionnaires are shared with those suppliers' customers who choose to participate in the program.

The System integrates a standardized questionnaire for gathering quantitative carbon emissions, energy and water data, as well as qualitative information on suppliers' environmental management practices.

Example of data gathering in the Carbon Reporting System:

The Carbon Reporting System also includes an emissions calculator to support supplier companies that are new to calculating their carbon footprint. Completed questionnaires are shared with those suppliers' customers who choose to participate in the program.

Benefits of a standardized carbon reporting system include:

  • Reduced redundant requests for supplier environmental data. In 2010, participating suppliers shared their data with an average of four customers.
  • Increased supply chain awareness on the importance of measuring and reporting carbon emissions data. In 2010, 676 suppliers participated in the EICC’s Carbon Reporting System.
  • Providing a foundation for having informed, targeted discussions with suppliers about performance improvement. Participating companies are engaging directly with their manufacturing suppliers to collaborate on ways to manage greenhouse gas emissions and increase energy efficiency.

More information on the System can be found in our yearly reporting, Greening the Supply Chain: 2010.
